About Keno Katsuda

Headshot 4.jpg

Hi, I'm Keno Katsuda. I'm an English and Social Sciences tutor with five years of experience supporting students across international, public, and private school systems.

I began tutoring during COVID with US-based education companies, teaching one-on-one and in small groups over Zoom. Since then, I've transitioned to supporting students both in person in Tokyo and online. I hold a bachelor's degree in History of Art from University College London and a master's degree in Global Political Economy from Goldsmiths University.

Alongside tutoring, I work as a freelance journalist and copywriter, with writing published in The Guardian and Teen Vogue, and produced copy for clients including Greenpeace, SK-II, Rakuten, and Itochu. Having a professional background in both American and British English allows me to support students confidently in either context. I'm also currently completing a professional teacher-training program to deepen my instructional methods, assessment strategies, and classroom management strategies.

I've taught students of all ages and English proficiency levels, from early readers to advanced high school writers, and I understand the unique challenges of moving between public, private, and international school environments. Having grown up between the US and Japan, I'm familiar with the expectations and learning cultures of multiple systems, which helps me support students navigating cross-cultural or multilingual education.

My Teaching Philosophy

My tutoring approach is highly personalized. Every student learns differently, so I tailor materials, pacing, and strategies to meet their individual needs. Working independently, rather than within a rigid curriculum, allows me to offer the flexibility and depth that make one-on-one learning genuinely effective.

Students who have struggled with traditional tutoring often tell me that they enjoy my sessions the most—something that I credit to my focus on engagement and confidence-building.

I emphasize critical thinking and problem-solving in writing from an early age, supporting students in forming their own perspectives rather than relying on templates. Whenever possible, I choose readings and topics connected to students' interests, helping them stay motivated and develop the literacy skills they'll use for life.
